Parking Tips

Head In Parking

  1. When you are going to park head in into a parking space, steer as wide as you can to get into the space, this will allow you to straighten out as you are pulling in.

  2. When pulling in, roll your driver side window all the way down and stick your head out to align the side of your car with the line on the ground. Try to align the top edge of your door (where your window comes out) parallel with the line on the ground with a few inches in between.

  3. Approach the open parking lot spot slowly. Just as you reach the car next to the spot where you want to park, turn your wheel in the opposite direction from the spot (left if the parking spot is on the right, and vice versa if it's on the left) so that your car moves outward. This will allow you more room to park straight into the spot. Make sure no one is coming from the opposite direction before you perform this maneuver.

  4. Pull your wheel back toward the free space once the front bumper goes about two feet past the first line marking the spot and keep rolling slowly. Use the lines as your guideliness to remain straight.

  5. Drive into the parking space being careful not to connect with other parked cars. You'll know you are straight if your front bumper eases right into the spot with ample space between both sides of your car and the other two parked cars.

Parallel Parking

End Space Parking

Obviously, if the angle of your car is skewed in relation to the angle or straightness of the lines you are parking in between, this will make it more difficult for any cars that may be forced to park on either side of you. This can make it more difficult for the driver to the right side of your car to get in or out of their vehicle. Likewise, if a car parks on the driver's side of your car while you are away, this could actually make it difficult for YOU to get back into your own car! STUPID!

Whenever possible, park in either the first space or the end space of a row of parking spaces. This gives you room to park further away from the car next to you or any cars that may show up after you have parked. This will:

  1. give YOU more room to open your door wide to get out of your car (duh!)
  2. give your passenger more room to get out of your car
  3. give more room to whomever parks (or is parked) next to you (how nice of you!)
  4. you just saved everyone the possibility of a door ding as well!
